ATRIUM – The Architecture of the Rationalist Period in Cesenatico
Cesenatico is an integral part of the European project ATRIUM – Architecture of Totalitarian Regimes in Europe’s Urban Memory, one of the 45 cultural routes certified by the Council of Europe. The project promotes critical knowledge of 20th-century architectural heritage linked to totalitarian regimes, with the aim of raising awareness among citizens and visitors about the values of democracy, human rights, and historical memory.
In the context of ATRIUM, the Municipality of Cesenatico officially joined in 2022, mapping four emblematic rationalist architecture buildings constructed during the fascist regime. The new rationalist style is also expressed in some private residences, such as Villa Capecchi (1934) by Matteo Focaccia, and Villa Placucci (1937) by Saul Bravetti, who also designed the Casa del Fascio (1936-37), now home to the municipal library. These buildings represent significant testimonies of the urban planning and architecture of the period, contributing to a critical reading of the past and the promotion of conscious citizenship.
A separate chapter is dedicated to the so-called “colonies”. These seaside summer camps, promoted by Benito Mussolini in the 1930s, stand out as examples of architectural experimentation. On the eve of World War II, Cesenatico had as many as 73 colonies, among which the particularly interesting AGIP colony (1937-38), designed by Giuseppe Vaccaro for the company of the same name, stands out.
The ATRIUM project represents an opportunity for Cesenatico to reflect on the past through architecture, involve new generations in building a shared memory, and promote active and conscious citizenship. The city, with its heritage and participation, contributes to a European dialogue on memory, identity, and democracy.
